Clearing the garage before moving house: a 6-week timeline

Why the garage is the hardest room to move
Garages collect heavy, awkward and hazardous items that do not pack neatly into boxes. Removal quotes are usually based on volume, so a full garage can add a large chunk to the price. Leaving it to the last week is one of the most common causes of moving day stress.
Because most removal firms price by volume and time, every item cleared from the garage before the survey can reduce the quote. Sell or give away bulky items first, such as old furniture, gym equipment and spare shelving, as these take up the most space in a lorry. If you are moving a long distance, consider whether cheap or bulky items are worth transporting at all compared with replacing them at the new home.
Six to five weeks before
- Walk through the garage and decide what is coming, being honest about what you use
- Measure the garage at the new home, if there is one, before keeping large items
- List items to sell and start listing them
- Book charity collections, which can have waiting lists
- Get removal quotes after the first sort, not before
Four to three weeks before
- Book a clear-out, skip or tip runs for what is going
- Take paint, oil, chemicals and batteries to the recycling centre
- Return gas bottles to the supplier
- Drain fuel from mowers and garden machinery, following the manual
- Dismantle shelving and workbenches you are taking
This is also a good time to deal with anything awkward or heavy, such as old fridges, freezers and gym equipment, which may need special collection or a second pair of hands. Leaving these until the last week often means paying extra for an urgent collection.
Two weeks to moving day
- Pack tools into strong boxes, not oversized ones
- Wrap sharp tools and blades
- Label boxes by room or zone at the new property
- Keep a small box of essential tools for moving day
- Sweep the garage out once it is empty
- Check the contract for anything you agreed to leave
Keep the garage clear of packed boxes from the rest of the house if you can. Removal teams work faster when the garage is a separate, labelled area, and it avoids the last-minute discovery of a corner nobody had sorted.
Items removal firms usually will not carry
| Item | What to do |
|---|---|
| Petrol, diesel and fuel cans | Use up, or take empty containers only |
| Gas bottles | Return to supplier or move yourself following safety advice |
| Paint, solvents and chemicals | Use up, give away or take to recycling centre |
| Fireworks and ammunition | Specialist advice |
| Lithium batteries and e-bikes | Check with the removal firm |
| Plants and garden waste | Ask first, often refused for long moves |
Rules vary between companies, so ask your removal firm for its list of excluded items when you book.
What to leave for the buyer
The property information forms and the contract set out what fixtures and fittings are included. Fixed shelving, workbenches or a garage door opener may be listed as staying. Removing things you agreed to leave, or leaving behind a garage full of rubbish, can cause disputes at completion. Buyers generally expect an empty, swept garage unless agreed otherwise.
Leave practical things the buyer will need, such as the garage door keys, remote controls and any manuals for an electric door, and tell your solicitor or estate agent where they will be. A labelled envelope on the kitchen side is a simple way to make sure nothing is missed.
Packing garage items safely
Garage contents are heavy, sharp and oddly shaped, so packing them properly protects both the items and the people carrying them.
- Use small, strong boxes for tools so they stay liftable
- Wrap blades, saws and shears in cardboard or old towels and tape them
- Empty and dry garden equipment and wrap hose ends
- Remove batteries from power tools and pack them separately
- Bag screws, fixings and small parts and label them
- Dismantle bikes only if the removal firm asks, and keep fixings together
- Tie long-handled garden tools into bundles
Clearly mark heavy boxes so they are carried by two people or on a sack truck.
Frequently asked questions
When should I start clearing the garage before a move?
About six weeks before moving day is a sensible start for a moderately full garage, and earlier if it is packed or you want to sell items. This gives time to sort, sell, book charity collections and dispose of hazardous items before the final packing stage. Getting removal quotes after the first sort usually gives a lower figure. Earlier is better if you need to sell bulky items.
Will removal companies move my lawn mower?
Most will, but they usually ask for petrol mowers to be drained of fuel and cleaned, and some ask for the oil to be drained or sealed too. Check the manufacturer's guidance and your removal firm's rules. Electric and battery mowers are simpler, though some firms ask for loose lithium batteries to be packed separately.
Do I have to empty the garage before completion?
Unless the contract says otherwise, buyers expect the property to be left with vacant possession, which generally means empty apart from the agreed fixtures and fittings. Leaving rubbish or unwanted items behind can cause disputes and delays. If you need to leave items such as shelving, agree it with the buyer through your solicitor. Your solicitor can also confirm exactly what the contract requires.
