Garage Decluttering

Garage organising

Organising the items you keep after a garage declutter: zoned storage, shelving and wall racks, with space for the car or a workshop. Typical UK costs.

In short: Garage organising arranges the items you keep after a declutter into a practical layout, grouping them by use and getting them off the floor onto shelving, hooks and wall racks, with space left for the car, bikes or a workbench. It suits anyone who wants the garage to stay usable rather than fill up again. In the UK it is typically charged at £40 to £70 per hour for a two-person team plus the cost of any storage.

Garage organising

Clearing a garage solves today's problem, but without a layout that works, it tends to fill up again within a year or two. Organising means giving every group of items a home: garden tools near the door to the garden, car care near the bonnet, seasonal decorations and camping kit up high, and frequently used items within easy reach. Floor space is kept as clear as possible so the car, bikes or a workshop area fit comfortably.

Most garages have more wall space than people use. Freestanding steel shelving units, wall-mounted rails, hooks for bikes and ladders, and labelled clear boxes make a big difference for a modest outlay. We can work with the shelving you already have or arrange the layout around storage you buy. Fixings into garage walls need to suit the wall type and the load.

What is included

  • Planning a layout around how you use the garage
  • Grouping items by use, such as garden, DIY, car, sport and seasonal
  • Arranging items on existing shelving, or assembling freestanding units you have bought
  • Hanging bikes, ladders and garden tools on wall hooks where suitable fixings allow
  • Heavy items placed low and frequently used items near the door
  • Labelling boxes and shelves if wanted
  • Leaving a clear route and space for the car or workbench

Who it is for

  • Families who want to keep bikes, toys and sports kit tidy
  • People who want the car back inside the garage
  • DIYers wanting a workbench area with tools on the wall
  • Garages used as overflow storage for the house
  • Anyone who has decluttered before and seen it fill up again

How much does it cost?

As a guide, organising time is usually charged at £40 to £70 per hour for a two-person team. Freestanding steel shelving units commonly cost £40 to £150 each, with wall rails and hooks extra. See our full cost guide.

How it works

How garage organising works, step by step
  1. Understand how you use it

We ask what the garage needs to do, such as house the car, store bikes, act as a workshop or hold overflow from the house.

  2. Plan the zones

Items are grouped into zones by use and how often you need them, and shelving positions are agreed.

  3. Set up storage

Shelving is assembled or arranged, wall hooks fitted where the wall allows, and boxes labelled.

  4. Put everything in place

Kept items go into their zones, and we walk through the layout with you at the end.

Garage organising: FAQs

What is the best storage for a garage?

Freestanding steel or heavy-duty plastic shelving is the most flexible option and suits most garages. Wall-mounted rails with hooks are ideal for bikes, ladders, hoses and long-handled tools. Ceiling racks work for light, seldom-used items in garages with enough height. Clear or labelled lidded boxes keep dust and damp out and stop shelves becoming jumbled.

Will items stored in a garage get damp?

Many UK garages are unheated and can get cold and damp, especially single-skin brick or prefabricated ones. Keep paper, textiles, photographs, upholstered furniture and electronics off the floor in sealed plastic boxes, or store them in the house. Leaving a gap between boxes and the wall improves air flow, and a sound roof and door seal help a lot.

Can you fit wall shelving and hooks?

Light hooks and rails can be fixed where the wall is suitable. Prefabricated concrete panel garages and single-skin brick walls need the right fixings, and some panels are not suitable for heavy loads at all. For heavy shelving or racking bolted to walls, a carpenter or handyman may be more appropriate, so mention it when you ask for a quote.

How do I stop the garage filling up again?

Give everything a set home, keep a donate box near the door and empty it every few months, and avoid storing things for other people indefinitely. A quick review each spring and autumn, when garden and seasonal items are swapped round, keeps clutter from building up. If something has no home, it is a sign to decide whether you really need it.
