How to declutter a garage: a step-by-step plan
Updated 6 November 2026 · By the Garage Decluttering team
Short answer: To declutter a garage, empty it zone by zone onto the drive, sort every item into keep, donate, recycle and dispose, and only put back what you actually use. Arrange the items you keep by category on shelves or wall racks, and deal with hazardous items such as paint, oil and gas bottles separately through a recycling centre or supplier.

Before you start
- Pick a dry day and allow more time than you think
- Have bags, boxes and labels ready for each category
- Check your local recycling centre's rules for paint, oil and electricals
- Book any charity collections in advance
Sort into four piles
| Pile | What goes in it |
|---|---|
| Keep | Things you have used in the last year or genuinely need |
| Donate or sell | Working furniture, bikes, tools and toys in good condition |
| Recycle | Metal, cardboard, wood, electricals and garden waste |
| Dispose | Broken items that cannot be reused or recycled |
Organise what you keep
- Group by use: garden, DIY, car, sport, seasonal
- Get things off the floor with shelving, hooks and wall racks
- Use clear or labelled boxes
- Keep heavy items low and frequently used items near the door
- Leave a clear path and space for the car if you need it
Awkward items
Paint, motor oil, garden chemicals and batteries must not go in general waste. Many household recycling centres take small quantities from householders. Gas bottles usually go back to the supplier, and old fridges or freezers need specialist recycling.
